F.A.Q.

Frequently Asked Questions
If you have a question...
... then you've come to the right place! Here, we'll do our best to answer whatever questions we thought of in the building of this game.

We can't consider everything though and that's where you come in! Please comment if you have a question that's not addressed in the basic F.A.Q. We will add to it as needed.
IC Questions
    Where am I?
You are on the continent of Kamurkia, which is recovering from a great calamity. Specifically, you are in Town to start. Charlie has created this town to house the off-worlders that are now arriving... and seem unable to maintain their forms too far away from the summoning-circle.

You can find a more detailed explanation of Town and other locations here.

    How did I get here?
So, about that summoning circle: It appeared out of nowhere and began bringing in people from off-world. No one really seems to know why! It just kind of happened, honestly, and most people are as confused as anyone arriving.

    What did I arrive with?
Characters arrive with what was on their person before they were summoned. Items that cannot fit within bags or pockets (or that were not physically strapped onto them) do not arrive with characters. If they were in a car or on a motorcycle at the time of summoning, unfortunately, their sweet ride doesn't make the trip. They also do not arrive with any companion animals that may have been with them at the time.

Yet, you may not have to be separated from Fido forever. Some things you'll be able to summon once your bond to this world is strong enough.

    Who is Charlie?
Charlie is actually the recently-christened god of this land! As such, he was voluntold stepped up to take on the task of helping off-worlders getting settled and situated in this realm.

If Charlie is a god, why can't he just send me home?
His power and magic has all but been depleted due to his efforts in helping stop the calamity from claiming the world. Really takes it out of a guy, let him tell you.

Fine. If I'm stuck here, where will I live?
Town itself has cottages ranging from small single living to large family accommodations that are being continuously built to suit off-worlders needs. It is primitive living: no running water, electricity or modern conveniences, but it’s a solid roof over your head with basic furnishings and a garden to boot! Also, it's free.

    What's the local population like?
Although Town is mostly made up of off-worlders, the bordering villages seem to be a diverse mix of races found throughout this world. From humans, elves, dwarves and halflings, to the myriad species of beastmen, fae and other fantastical creatures, everyone presents a more or less united front. Differences have been set aside, or at least placed on hold, in the interest of bringing their home back from the brink.

    What's the local flora/fauna like?
Familiar (to most) creatures like chickens, livestock and the like wander the area. There is plenty of flora that also might look similar to if not be pretty much the same as what you'd find at home while foraging.

You can find a more detailed explanation of things to find in nature on the bestiary.

How do I communicate with others?
(i.e. Is there a network? What’s that like?)

With your words, silly! But if you mean long-distance communication then that's what your sending-stone is for. It is a small stone tablet - that might have subtle, minor personalized markings as your bond to this world grows stronger - that you can commune through others with. Your rocky talky, if you will.

You can use it as a mirror to project your image to others, write letters along the stone surface to send, or speak into it. (It is capable of all the expected functions of standard roleplay networks. Text, video or voice, and locational tracking as well.)

    Are there any language barriers?
Everyone has a permanent charge of Tongues cast on them upon arrival. That means you can all speak and understand each others' languages as if they were your own. That said, it is intent-based. If you wish to speak your own language specifically and have it be heard as such, you can do so by focusing on it.

What about my powers or natural abilities?
They will be nerfed if they are supernatural things like magic or psychic powers and can break the game setting. Other, lesser abilities will still work but possibly at a fraction of their effectiveness to begin with and up to player discretion! They can also grow as you bond with the world, but game-breaking powers will never be restored to their full power. Natural skills such as swordsmanship will be retained, again, within reason! (Basically, if it makes your character completely OP, you will probably be nerfed. If you aren’t sure, ask us!)

    I'm not human...
That's fine! Your character will be whatever natural size/shape they are, within reason. Obviously if you played the King of All Cosmos you will be sized down accordingly. If you do not eat conventional food, you will find the food in Town will sustain you as your natural diet would.

Why can't I move to a different city?
In the future, this might be possible! For now though, off-worlders seem to get a little unstable once they travel too far from the summoning circle for any extended period of time. While a few days to a week is fine, after that they begin to fall ill and will not improve in health until in close proximity with the summoning circle. Until it's discovered what is causing this then Charlie will insist people stay close to be safe.

(Plus, you trying saying no to that pleading face.)

    I'm a troublemaker/loner/menace/etc.
You're certainly free to be as such, but remember: in-character actions have in-character consequences! Loners will be encouraged by the mechanics of the game to cooperate with others. As for troublemaking, people will probably try to stop you stirring too much trouble! If you want to stir a specific kind of special trouble though, the mods can help facilitate that as well... >:)

Just beware of being too naughty lest Charlie catches you! You don’t want to be put in nasty baby jail or end up in the custody of one of the city-states of the world. It's not a good time.

Can I do the mission/quests by myself?
Sure, but your likelihood of success will be low and the possibility of injury or even death will be higher. Teamwork makes the dream work here in Children of Bahamut and we encourage people to work together to accomplish great things!

So, what was up with that weird dragon dream?
As it turns out, you are now synced to the soul of a Greater Dragon (i.e., Chromatic, Metallic, or otherwise). Dragons do not follow an alignment chart in this world and thus are individuals not beholden to one given nature. Your dragon chose you for reasons only known to them.

To understand what this means for your character, check out a more detailed explanation here.

What happened to my friend (aka: how are drops handled)?
Just as mysteriously as people are summoned to this world, they are... un-summoned, we guess! Although all their things will remain, the people who knew them can take their belongings as they see fit. Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be a rhyme or reason as to who stays or gets sent back home. All one can do is hope for the best and enjoy the time they manage to get with those they come to get to know here.

OOC Questions
What is your application claim like?
Children of Bahamut will operate on a character claim system rather than traditional applications! These will be on a first-come, first-serve basis. There will be no app period/cycle and instead claims will be continuously open and updated as they are received.

You can find out more on character claim page itself.

If there's no application, how do I know what characters are already taken?
We do have a taken list that will be updated as frequently as the moderators are able to. If you aren't sure though, you're also free to check the character claim page comments to double-check!

    Who can claim characters?
Children of Bahamut is invite-only. Anyone who is friends with moderators directly are able to use them for their invitation. For those who are not, they'll need an invitation from someone currently in the game and it is limited to one invitation per person.

For example, if X invites Y to the game then X cannot also be the one to invite Z. Z will need to find someone else to invite them that's currently in the game.

How many characters can I claim?
For now, we are putting a limit of two characters per player. We may adjust this in the future depending on the size and pace of the game.

For now, players can save up their bonds for another character slot. This will be limited to every two months at most and also capped at four (4) characters per person.

What kind of characters can I claim?
As of right now, the characters we are allowing in Children of Bahamut are:

Fandom - A character from a novel, movie, comic book, video games, etc. that is established in that world.
Differing adaptations - Things like the Marvel Cinematic Universe vs. the Comicsverse. While characters may share names and appearances, a lot of times they are different enough from one another to be considered different characters.
Fandom OCs - A character made and/or inspired by a specific canon that has no relation or deep connection to any of the main characters. A good example of this would be an FFXIV character that isn't the Warrior of Light but instead just an adventurer from Eorzea and separated from the main storyline of the game.
Malleable protagonists - They also fall under the 'fandom OC' category. Additionally, more than one is allowed so long as they differ enough from one another (Renegade vs. Paragon Shepards, for example).
Original Characters - A character that is from a world of your design OR tabletop campaigns and MMOs.
CRAU Characters - Characters that come from another gameverse, jamjar, or whatever! All we ask is that players communicate amongst one another if the CRAU they are apping in had established relationships with certain characters in their previous game that may need to be discussed.

What kind of characters can I NOT claim?
As of right now, these characters are ones we do not consider applicable:

Real People - While we don't mind characters in fictional works BASED on true history or events (Hetalia), we don't want someone applying Christopher Columbus to try and take over this new land.
Fan AUs - This means 'the road not taken' AUs of what if a character did x instead of y.
Characters with little to no screen time - While we all love our minor characters, yes, if they only showed up for a thirty-second cameo and had one line, they aren't viable to play in this setting.

    What about duplicates?
As mentioned up above, we will allow differing adaptations of the same characters. For example, the same character from Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem: Three Hopes could both exist in the setting since one is considered a canon AU. If you aren't sure whether your character differs enough from the one already in game, feel free to ask the moderators!

However, to avoid things getting too silly, we are limiting this to two of the same character.

Are there any cast or game caps?
As of right now, we do not have any cast caps; however, we may adjust this as necessary depending on if we notice a cast growing significantly and taking up a large portion of the playerbase.

Children of Bahamut itself has a player cap of forty (40) players and eighty (80) characters as of right now. As people turn in their bonds for more character slots, we will update this accordingly!

    Are there any power restrictions?
Not really! Obviously, characters can't control the summoning circle or find any way to send themselves back home. Otherwise, we ask that players use their best judgement to either 1) self-nerf their characters as mentioned earlier or 2) communicate with the moderators on anything they aren't sure about. Generally, as long as it wouldn't ruin the setting or do irreversible damage etc. then it's probably fine for your character to keep to a lessened degree!

What if my character is chronically ill or on the brink of death when summoned?
If gravely injured or on the brink of death, characters will be healed just enough for their wounds to not be fatal and receive aid. However, this is a more privative world so while healing magic does exist and can help... characters won't recover immediately.

For those that are chronically ill or facing a permanent affliction (zombification, vampirism, etc.), not to worry! You're not the only one, friend, and there will be something to help ensure you can live comfortably with your condition.

Are there any age restrictions on characters?
Due to the mature themes that will be touched upon occasionally in Children of Bahamut, we ask that characters at at least mentally and physically sixteen or older.

    Is mature/NSFW content allowed?
Absolutely! While it won't be the focus of the game, we leave that up to the players to explore at their discretion. In the case of player characters under eighteen, we just ask that people be especially mindful of content warnings.

Does that mean I can write smut?
Yes! Smut is encouraged even! Just make sure you mark it as NSFW in the subject line or title of what you’re writing.

    What are the activity requirements?
Children of Bahamut is a check-in game that will not require comment counts for activity. Instead, players will be asked check-in once a month to ensure they're still interested in continuing to remain in the game.

That said, we do have an Activity Rewards system that rewards characters with varying bonuses, re-gains, and so on once bond to this world is strong enough!

What is the pacing going to be like?
The game will run on a 1:1 schedule but we're still working out how best to structure events, test drive memes, and give people space to make their own fun in the setting.

This is based off D&D, do I have to roll for things?
Sometimes you will, but that will be noted by the mods when it is required and will not be based around any stats and instead just be rolls of chance. This will typically be for missions/quests, fights, or other action-y events! Otherwise, you can if you want to personally but know it is not required!

    How will canon updates work?
Similar to how characters disappear for good, sometimes they might just 'blip' out of existence for a bit. Their sending-stone will still be active but they can't be reached. After a time, they'll re-appear at the summoning circle perhaps different than before but fundamentally the same (i.e. played by the same person vs someone new coming in with that character).

    How are character deaths handled?
Charlie has to cast Wish to resurrect you; however, this takes a toll on Charlie and sets everyone back from his progress toward getting you all home. It takes longer and longer to resurrect you after each death. Not only are you encouraged to avoid this, it is in the interest of the whole community to not let each other die. Also, it hurts! Death kind of sucks, honestly!

Clarification on quest submission because I like being absolutely sure of things, you know how it is with DnD and rules:

If you submit a quest on Wednesday and get the result back on Sunday, is the earliest you can submit a quest the following week Monday (rollover, beginning of the week), Wednesday (7 days from last submission), or Sunday (7 days from result/reward)?

Back again! \o/

What sort of non-quest-related, non-rep building things can people get up to to help around town or keep themselves occupied with? Unsure what's going too far and what's just fine to do. Adapting to civilian life is tough and miniSephiroth is used to having a lot of work to do, pretty much all the time, and now he has no actual schedule and a whole lot of free time he doesn't know what to do with. Is there wood to be chopped that people might accept help for? Things to be gathered, water to be carried etc? blacksmiths that might be able to put to use endless teenager energy to work bellows for hours a day..

Edit: how deep are the rivers near the town of Town?

Hello! Some questions on quests. I understand that generally the guideline is "one quest submission per week", but would like to clarify further:

1) If I end up threading out one quest in a few different threads with a few different characters (separately, they're not in one big party)- I understand that per week I can only put in one submission, but if multiple thread partners would like to submit that week, is it possible for my character to still be listed in additional quest submissions beyond the first but not receive any of the rewards? (I.e. they would just be included to say they were there/help meet party size minimums).

2) If a group oocly chooses to fail the quest, do they still have to submit?

I find myself signing up for multiple quests at one shot and then playing them out in the following weeks- and while I want to thread with many people and build CR with their characters, I'm also worried about unintentionally slowing down my rp partners' submission schedule if they want to put in the submission on a week that I'd already submitted something else for- I'm happy to not claim rewards for some of my quest threads and only do it for the CR and fun, and wanted to check if that was okay.

Thanks! Sorry for the somewhat convoluted question.

For housing, is it possible (or will it be in the future, I'm in no rush) to construct a greenhouse around one of the cottages, with resources available to the characters?

this is obviously a modern example with running water, but illustrates the basic concept in mind.

So, Green Dragon question, but their breath weapon is 'poison'

Should we take this to mean basic RPG "hurts you a little bit over time" kind of poison, or can we get more specific with it or its effects?

Deeply important questions about the sending stones:

-I'm assuming that the characters choose their own usernames, but just to be certain, can I get explicit confirmation on that?

-Are usernames one-and-done, you pick one and you're locked in, or are they more like display names where characters change them at will?

Re: Activity Rewards
For items that are OOC purchases rather than a specific character can you combine bonds from multiple characters for it? (ie, additional character slots or setting purchases)

Exammple: could you use 10 bond points each from 2 characters for 2 months of activity to purchase a 3rd character slot or does it all have to be from the same character?

Hi! I have a question about power nerfing. I'm considering bringing in an OC whose magic is unnatural and therefore slowly damages the fabric of the world. The damage usually takes hundreds of years to become catastrophic but it could still be considered game breaking so I thought it would be better to ask about it.

One easy way to nerf this ability is tied to a secret about his magic. How deadly his magic is to the fabric of the world can be influenced by the world's view on magic. If the world accept his magic it is no longer seen as an unnatural threat and will stop damaging the world. How do the people of this land view the offworlders who are summoned here? Would his magic be accepted here? Or would distrust and fear cause his magic to become more unnatural and dangerous?

BACK with some character-specific power and wildlife questions I meant to ask uhhh weeks ago whoops, related to town meeting topics--

  1. Gethen is a Soulbeast, a ranger variant capable of basically fusing with an animal companion; how might that work here? I've laid out a few self-imposed rules for how it works already (a soulbeast bond requires a ritual that demands the cooperation and obedience of the animal, e.g. he can't just grab a wild animal and Make It His immediately, even though that is how rangers nab new pets in terms of GW2 gameplay), but I want to make sure I'm not overlooking any rules stuff or worldbuilding factors that might be important to consider for what he needs to to, whether such a rite would need to be an activity reward, etc.

  2. Related to the above, is there any information Gethen might glean about Kamurkia and/or the wider world through any kind of ranger/druid-y communion with nature stuff? I'm assuming it will feel different to him since it's not Tyria, but I'm mostly asking if there's anything specific y'all want to see in a post-communion report/TL on the investigation front.

  3. Annnd maybe most simply, any recommendations for what kinds of creatures Gethen's first bond should be with? I'm fully intending to limit how many and how often (this isn't Pokemon, lol), probably to two native creatures (maybe adding one or two as more places become accessible, but I would ask about those on event logs when they come up) and eventually buying back one of his tigers from home - all limited ofc by his means for husbandry. There's a wiki page on what pets he could have worked with back home, but the gist is Medium (by 5e standards) creatures (wolves, bears, drakes, big cats, pigs, etc), ravens, and birds of prey. I'm fine choosing for myself too, but thought I should double-check before just going to town on a monster manual by myself.

  4. Mostly unrelated to the above, but I'm assuming we're handwaving post-meeting Charlie interactions? I can hop in DMs or crack open Plurk for details. ;o

So, as we head into month 2 of the game and our dragon bonds, we're going to be able to have conversations with our bonded dragons. Avan and his dragon buddy are both chatty problem solvers, so naturally, Avan is going to be asking about things like who brought us here and why. What sort of response can I expect him to get from those sorts of questions?

Hi again.

For purposes of Bond-based setting alterations, how does this happen ICly? Do we go to Charlie and go 'hey we want this thing' or does it just appear? What if the wanted thing radically alters the landscape, like say, OOCly wanting to drop a very large lake (but not Great Lakes large) into the setting?

Can Bondbased setting alterations be designed for other people to expand on/build on as well?

Dragons With Multiple Breath Weapons

[personal profile] hammerbearer 2024-11-08 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So! I know that the standard for dragons who have two (or more???) breath weapons listed in their stats is to pick one.

But while the character is still in transition TO full bond, can the 'breath randomly triggering' stage have it well... be RANDOM until it settles to the chosen one?

Or would mods prefer the easier thing of 'just choose one from the beginning and roll with it'.

SO I would imagine that Dragon Bonds are just a step up from a sorcerer whose grandpappy got frisky with a Gold and made a draconic bloodline.

Is there a chance, then, for characters to learn magic and the like....?

What kind of books are in Charlie's library, and what information do they have in them, generally speaking?

Ignis will have been reading a lot of whatever was available to him, to better pursue leads later. He's been given a task by his king, you see.

And more specifically, what would there be about dragons?

What information can my dragon provide? (CONT'D)

[personal profile] amaratha 2024-11-20 12:31 pm (UTC)(link)
For future browsers, linking a similar question from Avan's player here with more info. As my character would also start engaging with her dragon patron once she realises she's got one, I've got more questions! A lot more questions...

Feel free to take your time responding, or respond to them 1-2 at a time and reply multiple times. If you think this is too many questions and would prefer that I cool my jets I can also delete this and ask just a few.

The... status... of the dragons
1) Are all dragon bonds dead? Are they aware and speak of themselves as deceased (e.g. "When I was alive...")?

2) If the dragon bonds are dead, did they on average die a long time ago or more recently? (e.g. Would they be like "Wow, this was how the town of my birth changed in the last century", or would it be more of, "I need you to check on if my cat got rehomed to a good place, I died just last year"?)

2.5) Could a dragon remember and share details about the Calamity with their bond-ee?

3) Would it be surprising to the dragons that their souls have been drawn from rest to bond with offworlders, or is this part of the known dragon afterlife?

Fleshing out my dragon's life and knowledge
4) I'm assuming players are free to come up with their dragon bond's life and pool of knowledge for the most part, but are there any limits players should know of when fleshing out these things? (e.g. Maybe dragons don't know setting details because all the town names have changed, etc.)

4.5) Are the mods open to players asking them what their dragons might know of certain locations, the state of the world, etc., particularly if they've got something like a historian dragon or a dragon in office who would know important setting or metaplot details?

Dragon bonds and dragon transformations
5) Do the dragon bonds have any control over the changes taking place in characters from month 1-4? (E.g. if asked nicely, can a dragon make the changes less painful or even temporarily reverse them? Or the opposite, can a dragon arguing with their bond-ee give them a scale breakout?)

6) Must my character's final form look like my dragon bond, or can they look completely different (other than sharing the same colour)? E.g. If the dragon bond is a noodly scaley red dragon, can the character be a round fluffy but still red dragon?

6.5) In general, do characters feel like they're turning into their dragon bonds, or are they becoming their own dragons, and their dragon bonds are just onboard to provide a source of dragon magicks?

More of a personal question, can DnD adventurers level up in this universe
8) As mentioned in the title. I apped my character as a Level 6 DnD 5e adventurer. Would she be able to, as part of deepening her bond with her dragon or otherwise, gain more levels and the corresponding skills/spells? Do you have any pre-existing thoughts on a framework for in-game levelling up, or would you prefer that I come up with some ideas and run them by you?

Hi it's Rune with your weekly subscribed dose of incredible stupidity.

Are summon materia gainable?

If so, can they be used the way CC and a bit in EC does, summon them and then fight them instead of just siccing them on an enemy for 30 seconds before they discorporate?

I have this vague long term urge to get a Summon and use it for dragon combat training purposes. As hilarious as it would be to get one of the 30 different kinds of Bahamut to agitate the XVs with I'm sure that'd be immediately a 'no' since he's in the name of the game.

On canon updates, people 'returning home' for their update do NOT remember events happening in COB, yes? Nothing goes with them - not memories, not powers, just back to where they should be with no interruption til they reappear back here?

relentless_sentinel: (Are You Listening?)

So since Chai mentioned I should ask these here so others can see them, here we go:

1) Per an earlier question of mine, we know the characters are the only ones who can "see" and "hear" their dragon, but is it all basically in their head or can they actually see/hear their little buddy?
2) How much do the dragons know about why their new outworlder buddies are changing?

And 2 new ones:

3) How big do these dragons appear to their host? I keep imagining them as...well, you know how the Midgardsomr minion in FFXIV is, kind of small and can sit on your shoulder? My mind keeps picturing about that size (like big/long housecat size). Or is it more their real size when they died? Or maybe however the dragon wants to appear to their friend?
4) Since D&D generally has Bahamut as, you know, kind of the lord of dragons and all, how many of his titles might be known to the dragons?

Hair/eye colour in natives

[personal profile] relentless_sentinel 2024-12-18 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, so this might've been asked already, but for native humans, are the hair/eye colours pretty varied like in anime, or a bit more "natural" like in real life? And is it pretty different from other humanoids (like elves and such)?

I'm playing around with the idea of bringing in my WoL, so a couple of clarifying questions!

1) Just making sure that my understanding of the malleable protags and duplicate character policies is correct and multiple WoL's are allowed without one having to significantly differ from the canon storyline

2) My WoL has multiple jobs leveled, my assumption is that this is subject to the same limitation that Noctis received here and she'd only be allowed to have 5 job stones on her to start with

3) Related to the above, my natural inclination is to keep the Armoury Chest gear set system in place, where changing your job automatically changes your outfit, like in other job-based Final Fantasies. Is this chill, is it too silly, is it something that should be sorted out within the cast instead of asking the mods about???

Sending Stone Query

[personal profile] hammerbearer 2024-12-18 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
When you say the sending stone has location tracking abilities, how does this feature work?

For instance, is it automatic once a connection is made (that is to say, everyone knows where you are when you are making an active network connection), is it 'on all the time' so if anyone knows they can get to you? Or is it only when you will it to let people track you down?

If it's a 'yes personalized tracking' thing, does it allow for static assigments? Like Gaia can assign Smaller Sephiroth, person A and Person B to always be able to find her stone's location?

(And can this be clarified in the FAQ please? I think it would be a good addition regardless).
