โ CHARACTER Character Name: Sephiroth Canon: Final Fantasy VII Canon Point: Original game continuity, some nebulous time post-AC (so he should technically be aware of all canon events that aren't Remake-centric) Age: Died when he was 25(ish), has been semi-conscious in the Lifestream for over five or six years since, plus over a year in Amani, so he is either 26/27 or in his 30s depending on how you look at it Link to History: Wiki Personality: SO AN IMPORTANT NOTE is that this is not villain!roth, but Sephiroth having broken free from Jenova's fucked up influence on his brain! So while he is aware of all canon events(again, barring Remake timeline shenanigans), his personality is a lot more like what you see in Crisis Core. There's uh. There's a lot of guilt and self-loathing, as you might imagine.
For the many people who have not played Crisis Core, this means a Sephiroth as he used to be, and indeed has been ever since he was a teenager - overly serious, socially awkward, not particularly outwardly expressive, but (especially considering his background) a shockingly compassionate man who has never wanted to be a hero or a killer or, god forbid, like his cold and sadistic father. A man who was trapped and gaslit into a life he never wanted for himself, and didn't know how to find any other life for himself even once he gained enough knowledge to conceive of the idea(and who wouldn't have left the people that mattered to him behind to pursue such a life in any case). A man who horrible tragedy just kept happening to until he broke, at which point the monster his father and the ShinRa company literally injected into him took over.
CRAU: Amani AU Clarification: In his last game, Seph reunited with Lazard, Angeal, and Genesis - so basically all of his most beloved people, some of the only people who've genuinely cared about him in his entire life - and was slowly crafting a sort of long-withheld happy ending polycule with all of them! They had a beautiful villa, they had a dumbapple orchard, Seph and Lazard got engaged, Gen and Geal got married, there were a whole lot of apologies given and misunderstandings hammered out. Also Sephiroth learned what kissing and sex are and why they're nice. Unfortunately, Lazard got sent home, which was definitely a sad time, but...the boys still have each other.
Per the guilt and self-loathing mentioned above, Seph has put a lot of work in on accepting the idea (with encouragement from others) that he, as a person, is not synonymous with Jenova, and that maybe he doesn't bear 100% responsibility for what a hostile brain parasite that basically overwrote his brain made him do, but the degree to which he believes this...depends on the day
Dragon Bond Suggestion: I'm pretty okay with Seph being assigned a dragon! I have a couple loose ideas - black for transformation aesthetics, sea serpent for water/Wutai headcanon association reasons - but unless whatever is picked just absolutely doesn't work for me, I'm just as happy improvising with what he's given. Personality-wise...please don't give him an evil dragon, that's all I ask, he's had enough homicidal beings inside his head and he's going to probably chalk it up as further proof that he is somehow inherently evil. (But since dragons aren't necessarily locked to their D&D alignments, this doesn't have to narrow down the choices any!) Dragon Bond Changes: It'd be interesting if Seph's dragon also helps him with the idea that no, he doesn't bear personal responsibility for the results of a fucked up human experiment on himself that he never asked for or had any control in. It might also be cool if the dragon pushed him more towards active atonement and using his abilities to help people, rather than feeling like if he can't retroactively make himself as having never existed, he should just pretty much avoid anyone outside his immediate circle for the rest of his life.
Game Plan: Honestly? Mostly Seph just wants a peaceful life with the people he loves. He's pretty retiring for guilt reasons, but with encouragement he will slowly expand his social circle! He's already found a mini-me he's abruptly invested in...
